Policy for Art
Purpose and intended audience of the document
This art policy document reflects the way in which we, as a staff at Quarry View Primary School, plan for and complement the Art curriculum as defined as a foundation subject of the National Curriculum.
The document has been constructed and agreed by the staff of our school. It is intended to assist all teachers and students working in the school. It will be of interest to visitors to the school, parents and school governors. It is intended to provide an insight into the subject's management for any interested parties.
Through the careful planning and teaching of the Art curriculum we intend to contribute to the vision and statement of intent for our school.
Introduction
Our specific agreed aims for teaching Art at Quarry View Primary School are:
1. To value each individual's work and foster a positive attitude to Art throughout the school.
2. To give all our children the confidence and opportunity to choose a means through which to express themselves visually and creatively.
3. To provide all children with the opportunity to experiment with, and develop those skills laid down by National Curriculum and QCA guidelines to the best of their abilities.
4. To provide a wide range of materials and resources for children to select and experiment with, as appropriate to their task.
5. To progressively develop a working knowledge of the language specific to Art and to use it appropriately.
6. To encourage children to evaluate their own and others' Art work.
Delivery of Art
Art is now delivered using a scheme that utilises, in part, the QCA document for Art and Design published by the DFEE and a carefully planned progression of key skills. Each year group will work from their own year's objectives.Organisation
Each year group team during planning meetings, plans art using the Art Scheme document. The Art curriculum is organised so that all children can take part at their own level. Tasks are differentiated in one of two main ways: An increased level of teacher support and/or by using equipment selectively to meet the needs of the child ie. thicker pencils/paint brushed, non-spill paint pots. All children are given equal opportunities to take part in a wide range of art activities. At Quarry View Primary School we follow the Art QCA document ‘teaching art for its own sake'. We also believe it crosses into other curriculum areas, eg. story sequencing in English, drawing artefacts in History etc.
Environment
In Quarry View Primary School there is an Art area in every classroom with a basic set of resources that are accessible to the children. In Quarry View Primary School we value children's work. This is reflected in the carefully selected and framed work throughout the school. This work is selected from all year groups and represents work going on throughout the whole school.
Display
It is our aim to value all children's work by displaying it in classrooms and around the school. Our policy in this area is explained in detail in our school display policy.
Resources
Every classroom is resourced with a wet area and sink specific for art activities. Each year group has a basic set of art equipment, details of which are listed in the appendix. In addition to classroom supplies there is a wide and varied set of materials centrally located in the Art Cupboards, these resources are also listed in the appendix.
Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation
At Quarry View Primary School, assessment of children's artwork is done at an individual level and in collaboration with the child. We continually assess the child's art work and encourage the children to positively evaluate their own and other's work. When artwork is assessed both the skills used and the creativity should be highlighted. Framing of key pieces of artwork for long term display reinforces the children's achievement. Progress in art is reported to parents through termly parent's evenings and a written report on an annual basis.
Future Development
- To enrich and enhance art curriculum by making effective use of the new Space For Sport and Art facilities by way of 3D work to include use of the kiln in clay work;
- Produce ‘Ideas for Display' book to be available in staff room;
- Inset/art workshops run by co-ordinator (and possibly involving outside expertise), focusing on ideas for 3D work in Art.
